Jyoti Vidyalaya came into existence on 12 th July 1978 however the building of what we know as Jyoti Niwas was bought from Mr. Vasudevan Namboothiri in 1975 by then priest in charge Rev. Fr. John Vadakkel CMI.

The school was inaugurated by Bishop Rt. Rev. Gratian Mundadan CMI, then President of the Educational Society of the Diocese of Bijnor and Garhwal, who always inspired and encouraged us with his guidance and assistance.

On 12th July 1978, Mr. Rai Singh I.A.S, then District Magistrate, Chamoli declared the opening of the new school. This institution is the fruit of the repeated request of the people of Joshimath and is run and sponsored by the Catholic Diocese of Bijnor & Garhwal. The educational need of the locality impelled His Excellency Rt. Rev. Gratian Mundadan CMI, to open this institution here in the heights of the Himalayas.

The school started functioning in July 1978 with kindergarten class having strength of 50 students and 4 staff all trained and well experienced. Rev. Fr. John Anikottil CMI took charge as the first manager, where as Sr. Cyrilla SABS joined as the principal, Sr. Tresea Augustine SABS, Sr. Reetha SABS and Sr. AlphonsaSABS were the other staff members.
